text by hanyeoun at Angels Eyes Soompi

The principal, former homeroom teacher of Dong Joo back at high school recognized his famed student by looking up Dylan during his quick diagnosis. He screamed out his native name in the emergency room and busts Dylan’s identity to Soo Wan waiting at the other side. Shocked by the revelation, Soo Wan approaches slowly towards Dylan and faints from her sickness.

The hospital staff escorted her to a ward. She then recuperates and wakes up by seeing Ji Woon at her bedside. It is revealed Soo Wan has been overworking these recent days and has caught a serious fever. After Ji Woon leaves her ward, the nurse inspects her health until Soo Wan kindly ask her about Dylan’s whereabouts.

Meanwhile, Dylan patiently gathers his thoughts on the hospital’s rooftop only to be met by his surrogate father Yoon Jae Beom. Dylan learned the reason why Jae Beom prevented the lovebirds being reunited back then. Jae Beom revealed that his daughter was longing for Dong Joo for so long and as soon she gets hold that she inherited Jung Hwa’s eyes, Soo Wan wouldn’t be able to handle the news. The attachment of Dong Joo’s family for Soo Wan is so strong she would be capable of harming herself. Jae Beom insists the relationship as father and son meant a lot to him and it burdens him to see Dylan having feelings for his daughter in such rough times despite his prior knowledge of their childhood relationship.

Finally at the emergency room, Soo Wan requests a conversation with Dylan taking the matter outside. They stop at the stairs where they had their first kiss and Soo Wan wants him to be quiet while she examines his physical appearance with her hands, eyes closed.

She studies his face and his hands while retelling her story about her first love. Before she spills out his name, Dylan softly whispers his real name giving confirmation to Soo Wan about his real identity. She fully recognizes him upon hearing his voice again. Mixed with anger, desperation and frustration, she slaps him until Dylan says he deserves more than a simple beating. In disbelief with her discovery, she bursts out into tears and cries to her hearts content until sunset while Dylan contemplates the scenery in regret.

Later on, Dylan leads Soo Wan to his mother’s memorial grave without uttering a word. His childhood love realizes Jung Hwa has passed away twelve years ago. She compliments her surrogate mother how beautiful she was as her guardian. Soo Wan wondered what happened to her because she also disappeared without a word. She continues praying while Dylan observes from afar. Soo Wan apologizes to Jung Hwa for not being patient, having known she has passed away, she would understand but can only put blame on herself. Soo Wan cries and spends all night at the grave with Dylan.

Meanwhile, Jin Woon has discovered Soo Wan’s ward was empty only to pick up news from Dylan’s nurse she has left a while ago. He has tried to contact his fiancée all day and worries about his safety. He then calls Min Soo for an outing in a lounge restaurant. He shares he’s disappointed how close he’s with Soo Wan. He feels powerless when it comes to their relationship. Min Soo tries to divert their conversation and Jin Woon continues that Soo Wan’s emotional sickness is not based on her mother’s death but memories shared with her first love. As they leave the restaurant, Jin Woon catches the truth about the whistle’s owner by reading Min Soo’s expression and criticizes how she could be a detective.

As Dylan escorts Soo Wan, he reveals during these long twelve years, he has been busy at the States. He went there for Hye Joo’s surgery and turned out to be successful in his studies by taking the traditional doctor’s white coat. With his life going on, he couldn’t think much about Soo Wan and wanted to erase the memories he had at a cost of his own morality.

The next morning, at the police station, Min Soo forgot about Dylan’s note and investigates about the victim Yoo Jung Hwa and the complainer issuing the case request was Park Dong Joo. She then connects the dots by associating Dylan and Dong Joo as being the same person. She immediately leaves for Seyoung Hospital to meet him with a powerful punch. Dylan asks about detective Kim Woo Chul while Min Soo, if she has known about his identity sooner, she would beat his butt even harder. She then says the statute of limitations about the hit and run case has almost expired.

As they part ways, Min Soo goes to visit Kim Woo Chul only to find him growling pain on the floor. She then calls for Dylan for an immediate medical attention at the detective’s residence. Kim Woo Chul recognizes Dylan as his delivery boy Park Dong Joo and feels ashamed he couldn’t keep his promise about the case. Dylan tells him he doesn’t have any resentment against him and the detective feels grateful. As Min Soo and Dylan leaves the house, Min Soo reveals he was once a respected police officer and one of the best leaders she has ever partnered with. She feels bad for her sunbae because he got divorced, shamed by his own police workers and his life turned upside down. Min Soo reveals how lonely Soo Wan was after the eye surgery. Soo Wan used to wait news from him at her old house for years until she eventually gave up with sadness. Soo Wan couldn’t forget the ghost in her memories and has hoped she would meet him again. Dylan visits his childhood love’s old residence by visualizing Min Soo’s wakeful words.

During that same night, Jin Woon takes Soo Wan on a date. They then attend a restaurant where Jin Woon offers her a new necklace and requests she would wear that and give him permission to call her his better half. Soo Wan picks up the box and thinks carefully about her fiancée’s words. As Jin Woon drives her back home, he successfully gets a peck on Soo Wan’s forehead and attempts a kiss on the lips but missed his opportunity. Soo Wan goes back in her room and carefully thinks about Jin Woon’s offer.

As Dylan returns to the hospital, he crosses his surrogate father only to be invited to a fishing outing with him. As they patiently wait by the lake, Jae Beom requests Dylan to go back to Boston. He has prepared plane tickets while meeting Soo Wan earlier in the day. He feels much burdened by Dylan’s presence and the lingering feelings between our lovebirds could affect many families. Dylan tries to reason with his surrogate father only to stay a bit longer. By ending the argument, Jae Beom begs on his knees for Dylan listening to his request.

The next day, Dylan visits Kim Woo Chul’s ex-wife’s restaurant thanks the plenty posters found in the detective’s residence. He brings lunch to Woo Chul having a wonderful main dish prepared meticulously as a family would. Meanwhile, the retired police officer digs out the case’s files remembering a suspicious colleague telling him to close the investigation. Woo Chul and Dylan spends a good time eating a good meal.

During the night, Soo Wan meets Dylan asking him why he pretended not knowing her all this while. The other replied he was happy at first after finding her again but his heart began to hurt how much things changed during these long years. He then realizes during that timeframe there weren’t any good memories from the past and wishes to erase them. The only reason why he came back in Korea was because of paying his respects to his mother. He didn’t expect to meet Soo Wan again. For her case, she hasn’t forgotten about him as Dylan coldly tells her to erase the past too. She calls him “Dong Joo” and Dylan requests her to call him by his American name. He wishes that their lives wouln’t have to be intertwined again. They both recall the theater’s memories as young Soo Wan was tired of Dong Joo’s mighty attitude and questioned him he would be tired of her and could leave her side.

The next day, Woon Chan and Teddy notice she doesn’t feel well these recent days. Woon Chan comments it’s probably the time of this month indicating her period while Teddy carefully thinks about Soo Wan’s health condition. At the hospital, Young Ji requests Jae Boem placing her son in the emergency room so he could earn the respect Dylan had meanwhile our male leads enjoy a match of basketball at the workplace’s courtyard. After their match, Jin Woon wonders if Dylan got rejected by his first love in which the other complies. Jin Woon feels sorry about him as Dylan tells him he’s moving on by leaving Korea. Jin Woon tells him he was about to offer him the position of groomsman for his wedding as Dylan refuses thinking about Soo Wan.

An emergency alarm goes off in the rescue worker’s fire station as Dylan observes the team leaving in haste. He then visits Jung Hwa’s grave for the last time before heading off to the airport. At the hospital, Jae Boem receives a call from his junior Choi Jin Sang for financial help. It is revealed the junior doctor has been blackmailing the director for some time after witnessing he was explicitly involved in the murder of Dong Joo’s mother. He has seen the director removing Jung Hwa’s life support mask. It is revealed the director has suddenly hallucinated about his wife dying in the patient place. The director realized his wrongdoings at the last second and delayed the CPR from a momentary relapse.

After then, the emergency room is in chaos ever since Dylan left and the medical team stationed there revealed to Soo Wan that Dylan has resigned from his position at the hospital. Soo Wan visits many places like the observatory and tries to call him without success. She then heads to Jung Hwa’s grave finding flowers and her iPod sitting by the memorial.

She realizes Dylan is leaving for the United States. She’s quickly making haste to Incheon airport in hopes to find him. She wanders around until she picks up her whistle calling him. Dylan notices her until Soo Wan approaches him and reminds him of his promise of never leaving again without her permission.

The scene switches to a flashback where Soo Wan has been listening to every recordings of Dong Joo revealing he has been longing for her all this while. The recordings were set on every anniversary of his first love. The female lead calls him a liar. Dylan acknowledging his identity as Dong Joo, being convinced he can’t longer hide his feelings anymore, embraces her in his arms and softly tells her: “I’ve missed you, Soo Wan.”

Character analysis

Dong Joo (Dylan) & Soo Wan

Someone in this thread came up with the role-reversal concept. Soo Wan became the young Dong Joo who was bright and full of life while Dong Joo became the young Soo Wan at some degree where he showed to have a serious and grim demeanor. The concept is really accurate as described on in this episode. Dylan faced a new life without his mother’s guidance and eventually has to sharpen his general views in order to grow up as a mature and handsome guy. The fact he was like young Soo Wan was his position as a surrogate son to Jae Beom forcing him building a wall in which Soo Wan is trying to break through searching his real feelings. Soo Wan, who has now everything, wants to rescue Dong Joo from Dylan’s hardened shell. That Dylan’s cover is metaphorically the ultimate result of his mother’s loss. Soo Wan on the other hand became the savior of Dong Joo hidden in his dark world built by Jae Beom. She actually followed her first love’s dream and followed his path even after his sudden disappearance.

Yoon Jae Beom & Choi Jin Sang

Yoon Jae Beom is a mysterious character. Even with all his wrong decisions, I believe this guy is actually redeemable. He cares about his daughter. He’s also a coward and is afraid admitting his wrongs much like a kid being caught doing something he shouldn’t be doing. That vision of his deceased wife replacing the face of Yoo Jung Hwa was the good side of his morality trying to reason with him and was caught by surprise in a momentary repression against him. By the time he realizes Jung Hwa’s vitals were failing from the lack of oxygen (he removed the mask just before), he actually tried to save the patient by doing some CPR in hopes to reconnect to his vision once more and his Hippocratic’s oath being rebuilt. All of this was witnessed by Choi Jin Sang, his hoobae doctor by peeking his actions though the ward’s door.

Cha Min Soo & Kim Woo Chul

I was waiting for this relationship to have some development. Cha Min Soo considered Kim Woo Chul being the best leading coach she had in the academy. She admired his work because he was respected once by his fellow police workers and feared by the most vicious gangsters. My idea about Cha Min Soo is she’s a supportive friend of Soo Wan but she doesn’t want to take sides either. She doesn’t encourage Soo Wan and Jin Woon’s relationship. After witnessing the hard time of young Soo Wan right after her surgery, she supports Soo Wan by respecting her decisions and goes with conviction believing her friend deserves happiness on her own. It’s interesting to see she’s the only living proof that could prove Dong Joo’s existence to Soo Wan as the female lead slowly believes he was only a dream she made out from her memories. On Kim Woo Chul’s side, his life is turned upside down ever since he got shamed by the police force believing him he was involved in a corruption ring. Woo Chul was framed by a rat and as his family is torn apart due to his job, he has been living alone. His sickness is presumably due from eating junk foods and drinking soju every day. He’s actually a good guy who turned out to be seemingly looking bad in front of others. I’m actually moved Dong Joo is willing to take care of the detective’s well-being and that reminds me of an uncle-nephew relationship being built which is absolutely great! Bonus round

Investigation update (RED ALERT!)

Viewers are speculating Choi Jin Sang might be the true killer (injection) because he could be on Young Ji’s payroll. It wouldn’t make sense to inject something in the IV and come back seeing the results not knowing its fatalities and symptoms as a doctor. Another member pointed out the culprit being Young Ji herself because the suspect has a slender body and was bringing a red pen in the pocket matching her profile. One of the observable/hearing facts is Young Ji has a preference on wearing high heels knocking the floor making a distinguishable sound in which the suspect didn’t make a noise at all with his shoes. Maybe she did that on purpose or maybe she didn’t. As of right now, it is correct to aim towards Oh Young Ji and Kang Jin Woon based on their character profiles but no such concrete evidence could incriminate them besides vague clues and suspicious conversations. I am reserving judgement for this one. I'll need more clues about that fishy colleague insisting Kim Woo Chul closing the hit-&-run case.

One of the interesting articles I found is about potassium chloride. It is widely used for medical purposes. Well I don’t suggest the injection was filled with KCl because it could be anything. I’m basing my facts on observing Yoo Jung Hwa’s symptoms. KCl is useful by helping regulate the contraction of a patient’s heart. A high dose is lethal because the organ works on a thin balance between pools of sodium and potassium controlled by macroscopic pumps. When that balance is disrupted within the heart, it fails to generate the necessary electrical impulses for the contraction leading to a fibrillation. As the heart cannot pump any more blood, the body starves itself from oxygen and the patient dies. It is right Yoon Jae Beom is not the direct cause of death because he delayed the CPR and prevents Jung Hwa’s source of oxygen by removing her life support mask. He only amplified the effects of the prior injection making him believe he was the only culprit behind her death. Jae Beom could receive a criminal sentence unless he wants to settle with the victim’s family (Dong Joo). His charges / punishment will be diminished or clear because he had the desire of saving Jung Hwa and if the real culprit will be caught.
