· Detailed recap

The show begins with Dong Joo back hugging Soo Wan on the station’s rooftop saying he won’t ever leave her alone again and will stick on to her like a piece of gum that would never fall off. Meanwhile, Ji Woon arrives at the station’s parking lot, picks his cellphone and calls Soo Wan. The hug is interrupted as Soo Wan answers him from the rooftop with Dong Joo at her side. Ji Woon requests to meet up with her for a small talk. Soo Wan looks at Dong Joo who nods that he's okay with her  going without worries.

Soo Wan and Ji Woon goes out for coffee.  Ji Woon tells her that she can take this time to deal with whatever she needed to deal with and come back. No matter how long it will take, he understands and will still be there waiting for her. Soo Wan asks him to stop but Ji Woon persists and says that he feels like he is sending away his daughter on a journey and that he is not asking for her permission but merely signifying his intent.

Later the evening, Dong Joo joins Soo Wan at the first kiss stairs and she asks him what she’s going to do about Ji Woon. Dong Joo brings her into his arms and comforts her.

The next morning, Ji Woon contemplates the silver star shaped necklace and closes its box after noticing his mother coming in his ER office. Her mood drops whenever she hears her son saying everything is fine with his relationship shared with Soo Wan. Young Ji asks if the ER job is fine for Ji Woon and he replies he cannot uptake the same performance by Dylan. Young Ji expects him to be the perfect embodiment of perfection so he can proudly take the best title although he considers being the only son of his mother all the recognition he needs in the hospital and he smiles.

Meanwhile at the rescue station, Dong Joo is having fun with Soo Wan at work. They smile and tease each other even at lunch in front of their coworkers. Their colleagues are confused saying they might have been spouses in their past lives or enemies in the present time. The chief drags on the conversation by complaining about his married life. Only DJ stayed on to listen while the others cleared out one by one. Soo Wan tries to save Dong Joo but ultimately they were saved by the bell.

The rescue workers are dispatched to a soccer field treating an injured player. The patient is losing consciousness as he suffers from tension pneumothorax [preventing him to breathe normally with free air accumulating between the chest wall and lungs collapsing the lungs and compressing the heart]. They evacuate the air by needle decompression method with an IV catheter. As the surrounding crowd pressures the rescue team by yelling to Dong Joo they need to transport their comrade to the hospital, Dong Joo briefs them about the situation, the risk of danger and reveals he’s a licensed doctor.

The rescue team manages to stabilize and transport him to the ER. Yoon Soo Wan briefs the ER personnel who are skeptical about Yoon Soo Wan overstepping her responsibilities as a rescue worker.
Worriedly, Ji Woon asks Soo Wan how can she perform such a procedure knowing that it is beyond the scope of her practice and she could be held responsible if something untoward happened to the patient. Dong Joo came in and reassures the ER staff that he was the one who performed the procedure. The ER personnel are glad to see him after so many weeks and are confused how he ended up with the rescue department. Yoon Soo Wan leaves with Teddy to Sejong Park in the wake of another emergency.

During break time, Ji Woon treats Dong Joo with coffee at the bench outside the hospital and asks him what’s with him ending up with the EMT. Dong Joo replies he wanted to follow his first father’s career being his childhood dream. The fact he became an accomplished doctor was thanks to his benefactor whom he considered his second father. Dong Joo asks Ji Woon he now prefers to be called by his Korean name. He wants to talk about something with the intention of revealing his relationship with Soo Wan but the discussion is suddenly interrupted when Ji Woon was called to an emergency. Ji Woon promises they will continue their conversation later on as he runs inside the medical facility.

After work, Min Soo spends her time drinking with Soo Wan at a local bar as she learns that her friend has rekindled with Dong Joo. She is even surprised that they're both working together. Min Soo calls them both crazy and wonders if Ji Woon knows about it. She asks how her friend is doing and is very glad to see Soo Wan happy again. She believes fate stories are not only written story books now. She suggests Soo Wan should tell Ji Woon as soon as possible before he gets hurt too much.

Meanwhile, Dong Joo meets Woo Chul for another pork stew at the detective’s residene. The old veteran is in awe learning his former delivery boy has changed his career and claims Dong Joo’s father would be very proud of him. He feels bad about the director who has been raising Dong Joo like a son in the last years. The detective reveals he will be looking into the investigation case again with the help of his hoobae Min Soo as Dong Joo thanks him sincerely.

The next morning, a petite woman in her twenties called Ellie disembarks from the city bus and heads towards the rescue station. As she spots the EMT workers touring around the facility, she screams Dylan’s name and immediately runs to him and hugs him passionately leaving the other workers gawking and wondering out loud if they were in a relationship.  Soo Wan doesn’t like the scenery and furiously leaves the premises. Teddy Seo, at first sight, is immediately smitten to her appearance.

The scene switches with Ji Woon revealing Dylan has come back to Dr.Yoon. Not working at the hospital but for the rescue department. Jae Beom is troubled again and asks how come they have broken the engagement ceremony as Jin Woon replies Soo Wan and him aren’t interested into that for now. Jae Beom is deeply concerned about the relationship between his daughter and the second lead. He asks if there are any problems and suggests him to not let go of Soo Wan’s hand.

At Dong Joo’s office, he invites Ellie to sit in as Dong Joo calls Yoon Soo Wan who immediately rejects the call twice. Dong Joo smiles as it dawns on him and he comprehends her feelings.

At the truck section of the station, Soo Wan texts to her friend Min Soo what it means if a girl suddenly appears at a guy's workplace and hugs the guy passionately and the guy was hugging her back.  Soo Wan is having a cute rant and gets even more frustrated when she confronts with Dong Joo.

Dong Joo asks her if she thought his visitor was cute too but Soo Wan counters him by saying that this is a sacred workplace where one puts their lives on the line to save people.  Dong Joo asks if she is feeling jealous which Soo Wan vehemently denies.

Ellie joins the conversation by initially teasing Soo Wan but then later bursts into tears wondering if Soo Wan can recognize her. Soo Wan recognized Ellie as Hye Joo by recognizing the little sister’s mannerisms. They both reunite tearing in each other’s arms in a warm reunion as the family is finally back together.

During the evening, as Dong Joo walks Soo Wan back home, she tells him how Hye Joo resembles Jung Hwa a lot. They both say that Hye Joo is the younger version of their lovely mother. As Soo Wan part ways with Dong Joo, Jae Beom witnesses them both by his office window and calls him for a dinner meeting tomorrow. The father then rudely interrupts the call.

The atmosphere is changed when Hye Joo explores the streets of her hometown during a fare festival the next day. She wanders around eating ice cream, listens to Korean reggae and ventures through the market.

Meanwhile, Teddy thinks about Hye Joo, completely smitten by her charm, accidently burns Woon Chan and Jin Mo’s lunch on the stovetop. Woon Chan criticizes him how can a fireman cause a fire while cooking and asks what he was thinking about. Jin Mo notices Teddy’s red face as Woon Chan wonders if he was thinking about something mischievous and dirty in front of his kid. Teddy denies he’s innocent as being a virgin! Jin Mo asks what that word meant and Woon Chan smoothly replies that Teddy was referring to olive oil. The family argues about Hye Joo’s appearance at the rescue station.

Later on, Min Soo briefs  her sunbae, Woo Chul about the hit-&-run case. He is glad about the results as they have managed to narrow down the suspected vehicles implicated in the accident.

That evening, Dong Joo thoroughly prepares himself to meet Jae Beom as his sister Hye Joo encourages him that everything will be fine. As the main lead steps in Soo Wan’s house, the father welcomes in with Soo Wan waiting at the stairs behind. Ji Woon then arrives afterward joining the dinner. It seems the father has invited both of them for a very important discussion.

On the table, Jae Beom pulls out his trump card being Dong Joo is his hidden son he got to sponsor back in the US. Ji Woon picks up the pieces and Soo Wan seems a bit surprised about the claim. Ji Woon, surprised at the close coincidence, is glad to have Dong Joo in the family knowing he can take care of Soo Wan at the rescue station as the younger brother. Ji Woon now understands the situation after being explained that Dong Joo wanted to avoid the nepotism back in the hospital when he was hired.

After the dinner, Ji Woon invites him Dong Joo for a lift as the other denies. The second lead feels comforted knowing Dong Joo would be his brother from another family and gladly welcomes him. He reveals he had difficulties socializing with people and it is great for him to have a brotherly confidant. They both part ways after Jin Woo requests Dong Joo to look after his girl.

Soo Wan requests an audience with his father as he leaves his office to rest. Jin Woo enters home disturbed and haunted by Soo Wan’s words as he is being reminded about his 2000th day anniversary from his proposal with Soo Wan.

Dong Joo and Soo Wan reunite at the first kiss stairs. Soo Wan truly didn’t know about the circumstances and Dong Joo replies this doesn’t change anything. She worries about how much her father and Ji Woon will get hurt when they find out since they both like Dong Joo very much. Dong Joo comforts Soo Wan saying he’s willing to take responsibility and he will be the one to let them know. Soo Wan is comforted by the thought that her dad was Jung Hwa's doctor and comments she should be nicer to her father.

The next day, Young Ji is drinking tea with her friend Dr. Yoon as she tells what her son is lacking for his daughter to act so unreachable. Jae Beom quickly makes excuses as she tenderly requests Young Ji taking care of his daughter.

Meanwhile at the rescue station, Dong Joo helps Soo Wan cleaning the ambulance. Soo Wan reveals she has to work during the night due to a job shift as they both have fun together.

Ji Woon is being reminded by a restaurant notice on his phone about a booked reservation. He invites Soo Wan for a quick dinner between breaks by phone. As Ji Woon exits his office, he receives a call from Dong Joo requesting a meeting with him but he refuses since he already has a date with Soo Wan. Dong Joo then gets a call from Jae Beom afterwards.

Soo Wan heads to the restaurant with Ji Woon holding the proposal ring but withdraws it as soon he hears her being uncomfortable about the occasion’s setting.

Dong Joo is now at Soo Wan’s house discussing with Dr. Yoon. Jae Beom now understands why Soo Wan chose to be a rescue worker. He acknowledges Dong Joo’s feelings but he cannot give his blessings to him dating his daughter. He requests Dong Joo to back down once for him but Dong Joo says he can't give up Soo Wan.  He’s going to reveal the truth to Ji Woon. Hearing this infuriates the Jae Beom who slaps Dong Joo shaming him about his intentions. Angry, he insists his son leaving the house. Dong Joo asks why can't it be him,  he is the same Dong Joo whom he liked and was so proud of?

As Soo Wan spends time eating dinner with Ji Woon, Dr. Yoon feels remorseful about his actions and rethinks about Dong Joo’s words from the earlier argument. Young Ji asks his friend Jae Beom if everything is going well. He’s having troubles admitting his difficulties when he doesn’t have a confident by his side sharing his thoughts. Young Ji comforts him that it’s okay and that she will listen and understand his problems. Jae Beom is scared out of his life and doesn’t to be hated by her friend too.

Dr. Yoon gathers his guts by revealing he killed Jung Hwa by his own hands. Young Ji, apparently surprised upon the revelation, tells him the patient could have died anyway from the cardiac arrest and justifies the murder that she would do the same if it were to happen to save her child. The father reveals the relationship shared with Dong Joo initially came from from his selfish heart but as soon Dong Joo first hugged him at the States, he says he couldn’t force himself to dislike him as God is sending his wrath and punishment. Young Ji  continues to listen as Jae Beom keeps titling himself a murderer.

The scene changes as Ji Woon and Soo Wan are parting ways by stating the acclaiming rainy day they spent together. Ji Woon wanders on the sidewalk. The rain pours on him making him reminisce the day when Soo Wan opened her heart to him. She was revealed to be cold hearted ever since Dong Joo left her and she didn’t want to trust men anymore. As she met Jin Woo with the umbrella, she said she hates waiting as she goes home and she expected someone else to come back. She requests Ji Woon to not go towards her. Ji Woon gives a warm speech that managed to open Soo Wan’s mind and that scene was the kick starter of their close relationship. The flashback ends as Ji Woon looks down on the sidewalk wondering how his current situation came to this.

Dong Joo was also walking under the rain and crosses Soo Wan in front of the rescue station. They are both disappointed in themselves as they couldn’t muster the courage revealing the truth to Ji Woon respectively. After being beaten down by their own circumstances, they both hug each other in comfort under the rain. The couple is caught by Ji Woon observing them from the other side of the street, stunned by the grim sight, with his heart shattered in pieces.

Character analysis

Dong Joo, Soo Wan & Ji Woon

The truth hurts, doesn’t it? Such is the dilemma of our main couple deciding to reveal their rekindled relationship to Ji Woon. Sadly, their opportunities of unfolding the truth to Ji Woon get turned down by every possible circumstance. I’m sure the viewers out there are frustrated with the relationship being hidden and stretched for an entire episode but don’t get me wrong, it’s a melodramatic show where fate and coincidence play our minds a lot in which the writer excels on playing her script. Let me add that our couple doesn’t desire to hide their relationship. Their intention is to reveal the truth which involves sincerity and honesty! It may be brutal and sudden but having to be the one spilling the beans takes a lot of courage. That trait defines to show good humanism after all. The only exception goes with Jae Beom and Young Ji’s relationship that I will elaborate later on.

Ji Woon, my dear Ji Woon. What can I tell about him, my viewers? I acknowledge people pointing him being an annoyance for this episode because he’s the type of guy who cannot take a refusal as an answer and will do anything to drag a social circumstance to its limit. May I refute this point by saying he’s the perfect character letting the current arc story building its momentum to this episode’s finale? However, we cannot blame him being such a nice guy to Soo Wan during her darkest times after Dong Joo’s disappearance. Honestly, I get to feel sorry about him. Really!

Angel Eyes is the first drama since Good Doctor that I get to feel sorry to someone who has been showing a likeable personality through the show. Unfortunately, his world was broken when Ji Woon came to know his best and probably only friend, Dong Joo, is Soo Wan’s first love, in the most abrupt and worst possible way ever. His personality is fragile as he reveals Soo Wan is literally his better self, and without her, we could possibly see him in another perspective. I could totally see him getting a grim demeanor to our couple especially with Young Ji whispering poisonous words to his ears confusing him. A point has brought up he was a recovering alcoholic and the fact he will drown himself to escape the new reality, he may become himself a supporting villain. Supporting meaning he’s going to be a mindless pawn void of sense and logic under his mother’s grasps. He will then realize his guilty actions that would hurt SW and will eventually back away. If the writer decides to make him into a monster, I’m saying:

“Welcome to the dark side! Give him some cookies, viewers!”

Hye Joo

Here goes the first appearance of the older cast of little Hye Joo. What a sight! I truly want to applaud the writer introducing us the beloved sister with such overwhelming warmth. She’s really the replica of younger Jung Hwa. Hye Joo, known as Ellie, possesses a playful, bright and excessively eccentric personality. She smiles and has a great perspective of life although all that positivism gives her a naïve approach making her display her adorable charm. Our wishes have been answered when she was made into Teddy’s love interest! I support the filming industry picking rookies for their first roles and I was surprised they selected a model overtaking the role of our mischievous character here. Viewers in general audience are supporting this as they are moved with the emotional reunion back in the fire station. Tears to my eyes and I cannot wait for more screenings of her screwing around Teddy’s heart. Unfortunately, I cannot access and give a full out analysis of her character yet but I will review her future relationship with Teddy.

Jae Bum & Young Ji

Viewers have another villain on board participating in this irritating scheme of lies and deception. Best villains are so vivid making viewers despising their personality and trust me, I scratched my arm chair so much out of frustration and anger the external leather came out. At this level, this could tell you the actor portraying Jae Bum is doing a wonderful job. Young Ji however actually made me convince of my own suspicions against her being potentially implicated in Jung Hwa’s death. She’s not even slightly bothered by Jae Bum’s revelation. She is now seen as an obsessive, superficial, manipulative, cold and calculating woman. What if she’s the main instigator of the murder? She doesn’t really genuinely care about her friend since she would save herself first after all. I don’t think her personality is able to forsake her own son in the wake of a crime but who knows what is behind her sleeve? Jae Bum did a really big mistake by confessing his guilt to her and she could use that trump card against Dr. Yoon getting out of his hindrance. Not only I was furious against them, I’m truly convinced behind my screen regarding the displayed acting of our veteran actors portraying outstandingly the villains of Angel Eyes.

The relationship between Min Soo and Woo Chul is disregarded as there was no substantial progress and it is replaced by a bonus round of investigation updates!

Bonus round

Remember my theory about potassium chloride? (Updates in red)

One of the interesting articles I found is about potassium chloride. It is widely used for medical purposes. Well I don’t suggest the injection was filled with KCl because it could be anything. I’m basing my facts on observing Yoo Jung Hwa’s symptoms. KCl is useful by helping regulate the contraction of a patient’s heart. A high dose is lethal because the organ works on a thin balance between pools of sodium and potassium controlled by macroscopic pumps. When that balance is disrupted within the heart, it fails to generate the necessary electrical impulses for the contraction leading to a fibrillation. As the heart cannot pump any more blood, the body starves itself from oxygen and the patient dies. It is right Yoon Jae Beom is not the direct cause of death because he delayed the CPR and prevents Jung Hwa’s source of oxygen by removing her life support mask. He only amplified the effects of the prior injection making him believe he was the only culprit behind her death. Jae Beom could receive a criminal sentence unless he wants to settle with the victim’s family (Dong Joo). His charges / punishment will be diminished or clear because he had the desire of saving Jung Hwa and if the real culprit will be caught. I didn’t notice a frame where a nurse joined by Dr. Choi Jin Sang injected possibly the same substance into IV’s body making Jung Hwa’s lymphatic and circulatory systems collapsing by overdose. That injection alone made sure Jung Hwa wouldn’t come back potentially by CPR.

In addition, what was the motive of Choi Jin Sang? Well, I already viewed him as an opportunistic man that would leech blood from people’s effort and misery for his own gain (shown at Dr. Yoon’s office when he declared Jung Hwa’s body to eventually fail for Soo Wan). He used the blackmail to live off comfortably in the last 12 years after witnessing his boss actions. Is he a recoverable witness? Yes. Is he a villain? Not necessarily but he’s not justifying his actions for a good cause. Will he confess? He’s the type of guy who would and complain like a kid once the authorities threaten him removing his assets. I cannot wait to see more glimpses about him coming from the investigation results.

Another thing is the weird and shady partner of Woo Chul’s 12 years ago. I’m sure he’s not the rat as the hoodlum framing Woo Chul is currently hiding in the Philippines and Min Soo acknowledges this. The suspicious partner warned Woo Chul about closing the case as he claims the prosecution wishes to move on a bigger problem. The veteran detective didn’t back down from his promise to Dong Joo and focused on the hit-&-run case almost gathering all his evidence confirming his suspicions only to be dragged by an investigation team forcing him to resign from the police force afterwards.

What are your thoughts, chingus?

Misc.

There has been a recent controversy with Dramabeans. My opinion stands firm with their writers being unnecessarily harsh about the show. Some members here state they have been criticizing Go Hye Sun throughout her career. May I add how can you dislike or even hate a thing about her? She’s a likeable celebrity and a role model to many aspiring fans who has one of the most outstanding dossiers in the Korean industry. From acting, singing to producing and directing, I cannot possibly ask more from her. I would even feel ashamed to request something out of her because the actress has probably done much more than us in a lifetime. I’ll stop ranting here and let’s all enjoy the show in our respective opinions while being courteous to each other.

Thank you for reading!
