Episode 2 Gif-Caps

by fishytales

In brief: A fake tearful reunion amidst scepticism, two attempted murders, a car chase, the truck of doom, the truth, more lies.

What happened? The gist: Papa Kang declares Ji Hyuk as his son in front of reporters, much to Ji Hyuk's confusion. Ji Hyuk does not jump for joy and is more confused and wary. He asks about his mother under the assumption that he was born from an affair but Papa Kang tells him that Mama Kang is his mom.

Yes man secretary manages to find a heart donor in China though we don't know if they used similarly shady tactics. Nonetheless, Dong Suk is flown off to China with Mama Kang.

Ji Hyuk unexpectedly pays a visit to the Kang family house where he meets Ji Ah again, who does not buy this unexpected son storyline her parents are trying to feed her.

Ji Hyuk is told that he was lost but they missed him terribly – he looks unsure though emotional of the story that Mama Kang feeds him.

Yes Man secretary comes up with a plan to send Ji Hyuk on a trip overseas where he is kidnapped and conveniently disappears.

Mi Ra encourages Ji Hyuk to not be a fool and spend the money.

Encouraged, Ji Hyuk buys gifts for kids at the orphanage where he grew up.

The nun there gives him a letter his birth mother had left; in the letter, she apologizes and says she is unable to bring up the child as the father is not in the picture.

Enraged, Ji Hyuk goes to confront Papa Kang. Yes Man secretary diverts him to the company's general meeting and orders assasins on the way.

However, Ji Hyuk skillfully drives and arrives at the meeting and asks Papa Kang if he is the son. Put on the spot, Papa Kang introduces Ji Hyuk as the next president of the group.

what worked: Unlike other dramas, where the mystery is dragged out, he finds out the secret quickly and in a manner that makes sense. He rushes to the Kang family home and he compares it to Mama Kang's diary and sees the handwritting difference. When he asks Ji Ah, “you don't think we look like siblings right?”, there is a fantastic raw energy between the two in the scene. Ji Ah's scepticsm is also interesting because while she is not bored, she is not stupid – she frankly asks her father, “he is fake right?”

Highlight: Ji Hyuk's wariness does not allow even his friends to take advantage of him. While he is happy to have his friend drop by, he is certainly not going to allow his friend to mooch off him. At the restaurant, his market friends are all celebrating his new found status but he won't treat his market friends beer and instead, tries to convince them that the cheaper soju is better.

What didn't work: Mi Ra. Is it the writing or the dramatization? But Mi Ra still seems like soggy cold noodles. One moment, she is contemplating pushing Ji Hyuk off the balcony and another, she is smiling warmly at him while he plays with a kid at the orphanage – make up your mind lady!! Ji Hyuk's little crush on Mi Ra just comes across as weird – she just isn't that interesting or given how wary he is of people in general, why would he trust her?

Random observations: Ji Ah's blue dress and her red hair was a suprising winner! The truck of doom made an appearance – someone commented once in one of the soompi threads that when someone needs to die or gotten rid of, the truck of doom (usually green) makes an appearance; sure enough, there was one in this episode of Big Man. Were Ji Ah or Ji Hyuk even embarassed by the fact that they kissed?

Stuff to ponder about: In the little mermaid, the prince wakes up to see the princess and falls in love with her instead of the little mermaid. Ji Hyuk woke up to see Mi Ra and is his interest in her partly motivated by that? If Mi Ra is the princess, then is the mermaid Ji Ah, who he already shared a kiss with?

Up ahead: What will Ji Hyuk do? Take the opportunity to make his own destiny? Will the restuarant ajummah turn out to be his birth mother who abandoned him?
