· Detailed recap

Dong Joo and Soo Wan sit with one chair of a distance from each other while the male lead holds firmly his passport. Soo Wan breaks the ice by speaking first and Dong Joo thanks her for him having an opportunity to say his farewell properly. He told her to take care of herself and swiftly left towards the terminal check-in gate. While Dong Joo heads towards his departure gate, Soo Wan cries out for him for not leaving her side.

Inside the terminal, Dong Joo is conflicted by Soo Wan’s plea for staying in Korea as he recalls the recent fishing outing with Jae Beom asking him to go to Boston.

Weeks later, at the fire station, Soo Wan stares the sky similar to the beginning of episode 3 but she’s not smiling anymore. Team Leader Woon Chan worries about her safety and notices her recent behavior could bring turmoil to his team in case of an accident would happen.

A scene shows a glimpse of Doctor Choi Jin Sang prematurely leaving Jae Beom’s office at the hospital presumably receiving a bribe from the director in exchange for his silence. Young Ji noticed his presence and asked Jae Beom what was all about. She wonders if the person she saw was Jin Sang. By changing topics, Young Ji asked him when Soo Wan would be done with work.

A transition shows Soo Wan in an ambulance transporting a patient suffering alongside with a clearly disturbed guardian. She observes Dylan’s desk overshadowed and overtaken by her boyfriend Ji Woon in the ER department. He asks her if her health condition is okay due to her pale complexion. Soo Wan replies him she’s doing fine.

Meanwhile, at Woo Chul’s residence, he investigates his files of the hit-&-run case and a flashback at the police station shows he was searching for a foreign car based on their skid marks. He almost narrowed down the results as his colleague suggests him to stop digging with this case per orders of the prosecution’s priorities.

Woo Chul then gives his documents to his hoobae Min Soo in a meeting for further investigation. He requests her to continue researching the case. He feels empty about his health condition and reveals his life got boring since he has short lifespan suggesting he could be suffering from an incurable disease. The least he could do is to help Dong Joo and solve the case with Min Soo before the statute of limitations.

Soo Wan goes back home after with Ji Woon, Young Ji and Jae Beom welcoming her back. After changing her clothes, the parents launch the engagement ceremony idea and want to set a date for their wedding. Young Ji tells her to put her work on vacation leave while she sends out all the invitations. Ji Woon worries about his girlfriend’s current state of mind and suggests Soo Wan to get some rest. Soo Wan crouches in her room holding her whistle.

The next morning, Teddy Seo sees Jin Mo outside from the fire station and the young kid asked his hyung to call his mother with 911. Jin Mo thinks something bad happened about his mother as he cries out while Teddy comforts him.

Soo Wan meets Ji Woon outside the hospital and sit on the bench. Soo Wan reveals his boyfriend was the first man she saw after she opened her eyes (after her surgery). She initially waited for someone else as Ji Woon knows about her memories. Soo Wan tells him she can’t erase her memories and realizes she can’t escape from them and she does not want to now. She’s breaking up with him giving back the necklace that Ji Woon handed out to her. The man asked her if her first love came back in which Soo Wan denies.

During the evening, Team leader Woon Chan returns home after work seeing Jin Mo seeing a birthday video destined for his son. Teddy arrives from the kitchen, transports a present for Jin Mo and reveals the kid’s mother sent him goods from America. He quietly smiles to Woon Chan and it is revealed he was the gift sender. Jin Mo puts on his spider man costume (his birthday present) and plays superheroes & villains with his father and Teddy. Woon Chan feels grateful to him and feels ashamed he forgot a special day such as this. He asked Teddy how much he’s paying his dormitory.

Meanwhile, Soo Wan meets Min Soo in a restaurant. The detective feels disappointed how Soo Wan could easily break up with a gentle man with Ji Woon. She doesn’t understand why her friend still yearns for her first love, Dong Joo. Soo Wan says if her feelings lie with Dong Joo, which that would mean deceiving Ji Woon. Min Soo doesn’t understand Soo Wan anymore and stops arguing. Even though Soo Wan’s heart is suffering, she feels fluttered. She now understands Dong Joo how he could have been feeling after these long years.

After the restaurant meeting, she visits the Observatory recalling her memories with Dong Joo disguised as Dylan and cries on the cafeteria table where she spent her time drinking with him after the fuel truck incident. A hand approaches her and wipes off her last tear.

Soo Wan wakes up seeing finally seeing Dong Joo after many weeks. As she can’t believe of what she’s seeing, Dong Joo asks her why she’s crying criticizing her being fragile over his absence. He continues saying he had nowhere to run and that Soo Wan must take responsibility for him. Dong Joo asked her she could hit him many times as desired as Dong Joo embraces her preventing her initial delirious rant. Comforting her, he reveals he felt like dying when he left.

A flashback scene reveals Dong Joo had previously visited Jae Beom at Soo Wan’s residence. The director asked him why he came back as Dong Joo begs on his knees and tells him he realized if Soo Wan’s heart cannot be fulfilled, his won’t be either. Jae Beom tells Dong Joo he can’t proceed with this "forbidden" love and the male lead told his fatherly figure he cannot give up.

After the flashback, Dong Joo escorts Soo Wan back home as she worries about him leaving her side again tomorrow. Dong Joo reassures her he’s not going anywhere and intends to stay. He tells her she can finally sleep without anxiety, head held high. They agree on meeting tomorrow as they finally smile together comfortably.

Next morning, Jin Woo contemplates paintings in an art gallery. The paintings reflect the current bond shared between him and Soo Wan overshadowed by a mysterious first love entity. Young Ji joins him for coffee as Ji Woon tells his mother he doesn’t want to rush the wedding. He tells her Soo Wan needs time especially when it comes to her commitment at the rescue worker’s station. Young Ji asks her son if there is any problem about him and Soo Wan’s relationship.

After a while, Teddy Seo seems to live in Woon Chan’s house with no renting fee. In exchange, he has to overtake work in his superior’s residence. Soo Wan teases him about his mood as sleepy Teddy metaphorically describing his life being imprisoned in a jail. Hahaha. Soo Wan is eager to meet Dong Joo during the day.

The scene changes as Jae Beom recalls his prior conversation with Dong Joo how he could disappoint him so much. The director told Dong Joo he should stop addressing him “father”. Dong Joo replied the director could abandon him but on his side, he would never forsake him either. At the hospital, Young Ji notices Jae Beom is not attending work and contacts her informant by phone to investigate the man who left Dr. Yoon’s office a while ago.

Ji Woon escorts Soo Wan to a remote vacation house in the countryside and she asks him what his upcoming presentation is is all about. He reveals the house will be their future residence by handing out the keys. Soo Wan refuses his advances and directly rejects him. Ji Woon desires a warm family where he could spend his time growing old without worries. He told her the man he is was thanks to her. Soo Wan replies he should meet someone who can love him wholeheartedly and there is no space for him to invade her heart. She gave back the keys as Ji Woon disappointed wonder what kind of person is taking Soo Wan’s attention.

Once back home, Soo Wan recalls a memory where she met Ji Woon. The doctor saved her from an aggressive patient and they were sent to the police station for assault. Soo Wan treated his kindness with a great meal as Ji Woon told her she should take responsibility about his life after the patient charges dropped. The flashback scene ends with Soo Wan quietly apologizing to her ex-boyfriend.

The next day, Soo Wan is working and treating a VIP patient suffering on his bed. Soo Wan asks for medical advice over the phone and is confused about the respondent’s voice. As they finally transport the patient at the hospital, one of the doctors positively comments Soo Wan’s ability as a rescue worker as she prevented a serious outcome for the VIP patient.

Later on, Dong Joo visits Soo Wan with a formal suit at her workplace. She worried about him and told him he could have contacted her previously before showing up. Soo Wan is called for a staff gathering as the Chief briefs them about the current lack of medical expertise within the rescue worker’s profession. He gladly tells them an exceptional and skilled doctor is now specially employed at the station. He reveals that doctor is volunteering for the cause and will be offering his services. The doctor is revealed to be Park Dong Joo taking the position of Emergency Rescue Chief at the station.

His colleague Woon Chan requests Soo Wan touring Dong Joo at the station. As she shows him about the whereabouts of the station, Dong Joo teases her about speaking informally to him and intentionally causes a minor misunderstand with the staff. Hahaha. Woon Chan tells Dong Joo she’s a complete wacko hahaha. As they visit the cafeteria, Dong Joo wants to spend his time eating with her. He teases her even more with a big smile. The station’s chief slowly and friendly acquaints with Dong Joo as the changes were sudden.

Later on, Dong Joo orders Soo Wan for a verbal report and he tells her meeting him on the station’s rooftop. While Soo Wan briefs him, she’s losing focus as Dong Joo openly expresses his feelings making sure Soo Wan likes him.

As she accepts his feelings, Dong Joo approaches her behind giving a back hug. As Ji Woon arrives at the station’s parking lot, he seemingly spots Dong Joo embracing Soo Wan.

Character analysis

Dong Joo, Soo Wan & Ji Woon

No matter how many times both leads initially desire escaping the thing called “destiny”. In a kdrama romance setting, fate will always bring them together for a purpose. Such is the case of Dong Joo’s and Soo Wan’s unbreakable chains of first love. Dong Joo is conflicted with one of the most difficult choices he got offered. He was willing to sacrifice his happiness for Soo Wan’s current life and per request by his fatherly mentor, Jae Beom. Dong Joo takes up the courage and leaves for the terminal check-in gate reluctantly. After then, he’s really shaken by Soo Wan’s plea to stay by her side with the classic catchphrase: “Kajima.”. That alone makes him give some time for clearing his thoughts. He then discovers Soo Wan’s current state of heart. He realizes by the moment he stepped on the plane, if Soo Wan can’t be happy. He won’t be either.

Soo Wan’s heart is going through a rough and disturbing phase. After learning her first love came back and left for a second time without her permission, she’s also disturbed acknowledging his physical appearance 12 years after her surgery. Even though it was for a few weeks of absence, she could not remove him from her mind as the connection with him being the first love is solid enough to keep their relationship going healthy. In order to live comfortably during Dong Joo’s absence, she commits herself to work all the time straining her bond with Ji Woon worrying her father coming up with the engagement. As time passes, she realizes how much she wants to flee away from that connection; the more that it imprisons her in a good way. As the bond grows remotely in distance, she recognizes she doesn’t want to escape this reality because she knows what she wants in her love life and maintains that connection for the missing weeks from Dong Joo.

Most definitely in conclusion, I understand viewers would love to see more love scenes between our leads but the main theme will be a struggle fight protecting their relationship! Their happiness is short lived but together imprisoned in Jae Beom’s and Young Ji’s illusions. They will scale many obstacles and once they manage to climb the wall, they will remain together if the writer decides to give a happy ending in which everyone expects one.

Ji Woon has proven in the course of the show he has been a likeable guy so far. It is revealed Soo Wan was indeed a key changer in his life in terms of psychological appearance. He stated he was a different man before he met Soo Wan. Rejected already twice, he felt a sense of frustration, confusion, anger and denial. He doesn’t understand why Soo Wan would refuse his advances so suddenly after spending so much efforts building that bond with her since 2005 (Hint: His proposal is confirmed in 2008 on the 1000th day.). Ji Woon could potentially change his personality from likeable to despicable once he discovers his friend Dylan aka Dong Joo is back in the game with Soo Wan running after him this time around. The question here is what happens if his reality and expectancy break apart? Will he fall apart too? I will elaborate more in the next recap.

Oh Young Ji & Yoon Jae Beom

Well at this point, viewers can safely state their relationship is at a strong and mutual level of trust between friends and partners. Jae Beom tries to hide his mischiefs. Young Ji gets suspicious with Jae Beom to the point fetching an informant secretly investigating former doctor Choi Jin Sang. I truly don’t believe she cares for her friend Dr. Yoon but she mostly worries about her hospitals ideal reputation if something big strikes and bites her. She is characterized as being a manipulative woman and that shows she wants the best for her son where it reaches to a fact when she pushes the engagement forward and ordering Soo Wan abandoning her career.

Soo Wan & Min Soo

Their connection as being best friends remains with Min Soo being the lifeguard of Soo Wan. Min Soo has a great personality! She is protective of her friend. However, she doesn’t always agree with Soo Wan’s decisions all the time. Even Soo Wan would ask Min Soo for a scolding lesson if she derails from her path. When it comes to love, Min Soo becomes helpless. She feels disappointed how her friend could reject a lovable and trusting boyfriend for a first love that suddenly previously left without a word. As their friendly bond goes on, Min Soo will see Dong Joo in a new light once she digs out more through the investigation and once she learns the scheme of Soo Wan’s father including his suspicious friend Young Ji. Min Soo’s relationship with her sunbae detective Woo Chul will be covered in the next recap.

Teddy Seo, Jin Mo & Woon Chan

This is my favourite relationship so far after the main leads of the show. Jin Mo, as a toddler, misses a motherly figure in his life and that is a must for every child on this Earth. There is a personal commendation I would like to give to Woon Chan trying to raise his kid alone. We cannot blame him for being busy at work and sometimes, some parents do forget their kid’s birthday. That happens. Woon Chan forgot to send a present for his son labeled it would come from his wife in the States. As viewers know, she is unfortunately deceased. Teddy Seo tries to comfort Jin Mo at the fire station not necessarily out of pity but he understands him how it feels to be lonely. Jin Mo mostly only spends his time with his loving father and Woon Chan’s career is a tiring one taking a lot in one’s schedule. Teddy organizes secretly a tape wishing happy birthday wishes in behalf of Jin Mo’s mother making Woon Chan grateful and also shameful how he could forget a special day like his son’s birthday. Woon Chan asks Teddy how much he pays renting the dormitory at the rescue station insinuating he’s inviting his hoobae living with them. Finally, Teddy doesn’t have to pay renting but must overtake chores around his sunbae’s house. On this episode, Teddy has demonstrated how nice he could be by being a motherly figure to Jin Mo secretly while staying on good terms with his direct supervisor. I’m curious to see how Teddy and Woon Chan break the punch to Jin Mo about his mother’s death. Being the comedic relief of the show, they deserve happiness as much as our main couple!

Investigation updates and more discussions covered in the next recap!
